World Music Therapy Week was April 10th-April 15th, so we wanted to take time to talk about the power of music therapy!

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is the professional use of music and its elements as an intervention in medical, educational, and everyday environments with individuals, groups, families, or communities who seek to optimize their quality of life and improve their physical, social, communicative, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health and well-being.

Research, practice, education, and clinical training in music therapy are based on professional standards according to cultural, social, and political contexts.
What is the World Federation of Music Therapy?
The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) is an international nonprofit organization bringing together music therapy associations and individuals interested in developing and promoting music therapy globally through the exchange of information, collaboration among professionals, and actions. The members of the Federation are music therapy organizations, training programs, certified music therapists, music therapy students, and individuals associated with music therapy.
What is World Music Therapy Week?
WFMT established World Music Therapy Week in 2023 to encourage music therapists and supporters to engage in activities that increase awareness of and advocacy for music therapy and to highlight the global connectedness of music therapy, which can be especially important for developing countries.
How can music therapy impact wellbeing?
Both receptive and active music therapy interventions can have positive effects on an individual’s wellbeing. Depending on the presentation of interventions, music therapy can assist with gross and fine motor skills, emotional expression, communication, social skills, and more.
